Rain and jugo didn't stop Bol's squid fishing night

Bol held its Lignjadura, the town's squid fishing contest, on Saturday 10 October, and the weather did its best to spoil it: rain and a southerly jugo wind. Fourteen crews had signed up and nine of them still went out to sea, the Bol Tourist Board reports.

The winners came from furthest away. The crew Kum s Raba, guests from the island of Rab who had come to Bol for a stag party, went home with first place: 1.60 kg of squid, plus the biggest single squid of the night at 0.56 kg. Bolski Vlaji came second with 1.48 kg and Đigi Bigi third with 1.30 kg. Back on shore, Alen Nižetić and the band Paori played late into the night.

The contest is also a fundraiser. This year it brought in €2,590. Of that, €590 went to More, snage, Brač, an association that supports people with cancer and their families, and €2,000 to Petra, a woman from Bol, to adapt the ground floor of her house. The tourist board asks people not to send her more money for now; they will let locals know if and when more help is needed.

The entry fee this year was €40, and children under 16 took part for free. In October, Bol has one catamaran a day each way from Split, Jadrolinija's fast boat that runs on to Hvar, and the crossing takes just over an hour. Times are on our Split → Bol page, and today's boats are on the homepage.
