Good to know before you go

That's the first thing to decide, because the two ferries on this route are quite different.

With a car, you need the Jadrolinija car ferry. The crossing takes about 50 minutes, and it sails from early morning until late at night: the first one leaves at 05:00 and the last at 23:59, 10 to 14 times a day in each direction, depending on the season.

Foot passengers board first, then trucks and buses, and cars last. Travelling as a group? Our tip: buy one ticket for the driver and the car, and separate tickets for everyone else. They can walk on first and keep the good seats. On busy sailings the upper car deck is used too, and space around the cars gets tight.

Without a car, you can take the same ferry, or the faster Krilo Kapetan Luka catamaran, which takes about 25 minutes. It sails less often, 3 to 7 times a day, so check the times before you plan your day around it.

Both timetables change through the year, and some early-morning sailings don't run on weekends or public holidays. Pick a date at the top of the page and you'll see exactly which ferries are running that day.

In Split, the car ferry and the catamaran to Supetar both leave from the passenger port, but not always from the same berth. The Port of Split publishes the berths the day before, and you'll find them next to today's and tomorrow's departures above, with directions.

In Supetar, there are no numbered berths. Ferries leave from the main pier in town, where the Jadrolinija car ferry and the Krilo Kapetan Luka catamaran moor right next to each other. Directions to the pier

As for how early to be there: with a car in summer, we'd aim for 40 to 60 minutes before departure. Cars board in the order they arrive, and in high season even getting into the port area takes time. On our April crossing we came 40 minutes early and still ended up in lane 9 or 10. On foot on the car ferry, half an hour is plenty. The catamaran has no seat reservations, so if you'd like a window seat, come about 30 minutes early.

On the car ferry, foot passengers leave big suitcases on the car deck. The catamaran has its own luggage area on board.

Bikes go on the car ferry (€6.20 per bike), but not on the catamaran.

Small pets can come along on both ferries. With a larger dog, the car ferry is the easier choice: bigger dogs travel on the open deck, with a muzzle and a lead.

Our tips for the ferry

A lot of people from Brač take this ferry to Split for work, school or a day in town, and the trucks that bring goods to the island use it too. In summer, add the visitors.

Missed your ferry? In summer there are lots of departures, so you won't wait long for the next one. Your ticket is valid on any sailing that day.

It's a big car ferry, with a café bar, vending machines, air conditioning and plenty of seats, and a large outside deck, so you can spend the whole crossing in the fresh air. No wifi, though.

As for the boats, Jadrolinija usually sends the car ferry Hrvat, Marjan or Tin Ujević; Krilo Kapetan Luka usually sends the catamaran Krilo Nord (267 passengers) or Krilo Nomadic (250 passengers). The companies swap boats from time to time, so yours may be a different one.

As for where to sit, it doesn't really matter here. We checked the route on the map, and the coast is about as close on one side as on the other, so just grab a window seat.

There are no seat reservations, on the car ferry or on the catamaran: you sit wherever you like, first come, first served. Both have air conditioning.

Bags are stowed one by one as people board, so the first ones in end up behind everyone else's. If you board last, yours will be the easiest to get to when you arrive.

Jadrolinija: You can also buy them in person in Split, at the Jadrolinija ticket office on Gat sv. Duje, in the ferry port, and in Supetar, at the Jadrolinija ticket office in Supetar (Ulica hrvatskih velikana). If the ticket office is closed, you can buy your ticket on board.

Krilo Kapetan Luka: You can also buy them in person in Split, at the Kapetan Luka kiosk on Gat sv. Duje, in the ferry port.
